Biography

Born in the south of England, Julian Luckham emigrated to Canada in the early 60’s. In the ensuing years living in both West Vancouver and the South of England gave Julian a bit of a different perspective on both British and Canadian culture... in ways always an outsider looking in. The things that appealed the most to Julian throughout his school years was art, drama, music theatre, calligraphy, technical drawing, architecture and computer science. And after school there was his records, his camera and his bike!

A career as a designer was not something Julian planned, it just seemed to happen. The signs were all there though... as a kid Julian loved to cut pictures from magazines and combine them with his own drawings, and tracings of logos and thus design his own magazines. School projects such as General Wolfe at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham or Apollo XI’s Moon Landing were taken on as if assignments... for a junior designer. Take a look at some of Julian’s early work. After leaving school Julian pursued a career in music, working in retail (A&B Sound), radio (BCIT and Co-op Radio)and as both a live and studio sound engineer (Mushroom Studios). Eventually Julian’s love of magazines came up again and he decided to publish his own magazine, The Vancouver Preview. Due to the high cost of publishing it didn't go very far but a lot of people saw what he did... and work started to come in. With the Vancouver Preview Julian began working with the Macintosh computer just as "Desktop Publishing" first came into being. Julian's skills with page layout and graphics software made him a valuable resource for the local design industry. The next few years were like an apprenticeship, working with some of Vancouver’s top designers. One day Rob Bishop of Found Communications came into Julian's office and presented him with a plaque for the office wall... Goethe’s ‘Until one is committed.... Begin it Now’. Julian then began his career as a graphic designer.

Julian has been operating his own graphic design company, Dedicated Desktop Creative Services, for almost 20 years. Dedicated Desktop was first established in Vancouver in 1985, and has been operating in Ottawa, Ontario since late 1992. Julian continues to combine his passion for creativity with graphic design skills and technical expertise to provide the best in Creative Services for both print and the internet. In addition to graphic design and web design, Julian has developed and taught training courses and programs for design professionals at Vancouver Community College, the International Academy of Design and Technology and a variety of government agencies, private companies and other schools and colleges.

Dedicated Desktop Creative Services provides a personal service only a small studio can provide, but Dedicated Desktop has many of the same services and resources as a large design studio... and then some! Working with other skilled professionals in the graphics industry, as well as tapping into the fresh new talent Dedicated Desktop is exposed to through the training they provide, means they have access to a lot of talent! This means illustrators that bring a unique style to a project, photographers with a talent for capturing the right moment, young new designers that can speak to a new generation of consumers, and a variety of traditional and specialty printers that can print the job – big or small!

Dedicated Desktop provides services in Web Design and Development, Print Design and Production, Custom Artwork, Image Editing and Macintosh Computer Training to clients across Canada and in the United States. Dedicated Desktop is dedicated to the job at hand… your job!
